Hair of the dog…or in my case, the arm

by Joshua on May 13, 2010

With the exception of my head, I’m a hairy guy. My arms, my legs, and especially my chest. Many years ago I’ve shaved my chest. It hurt. It itched. For a long while. I learned my lesson. Or so I thought.

While shaving my head last week, I was admiring how tight it looked – no stray hairs sticking up – everything nice and neat. Then I noticed my arms. Stray hairs all over the place. Creepy long hairs. Ingrown hairs. It didn’t look good.

Clippers in hand, I decided I would use the ‘blending’ guide on my arms. This way, the clippers would not come into direct contact with my skin. It’ll look good I told myself. Trim and neat.

After the first few passes, a nagging thought entered my mind. Maybe I shouldn’t be doing this. Hair is masculine, maybe I should keep it. I perservered. I clipped and I buzzed and I watched the hair pile up on the floor. When I was done I was shocked. I looked like a naked baby. And my arms were really irritated. They still are – a week later – and the hair is almost grown back.

I guess this is one experiment that will not be repeated…

Becoming a Role Model: Self Awareness

by Joshua on March 25, 2010

Bald Male Role Model…Do you have a bald male role model? Do you even have a role model?

I’ve started a series of posts to discuss the following questions: What are the characteristics of the people we look up to? How can we become role models?

To begin, let’s explore Self-Awareness. It’s challenging to look inward, to be honest about our faults, and change our behavior. Still, as we address our faults and start to understand ourselves, we can change the direction of our lives. How did I start the process? Read the full post →

Cracking the Egg

March 20, 2010

Yesterday I was in my kitchen and dropped something. I picked it up and when I went to stand back up – SMACK. I cracked my head on the corner of a table. It didn’t look too bad then, but this morning the front of my head is almost purple. Even the smallest scratch can [...]

From my female friends…

March 11, 2010

Nothing is worse than a guy pretending he isn’t bald. That’s what they tell me. I think that pretty much sums it all up. No comb over, no amount of ‘volume’ shampoo is going to hide the fact you are going bald. Embrace it!

Best Barbers

March 2, 2010

I love getting a haircut. It was a very sad day when my barber told me it was pointless come back. He told me to invest in some good clippers. I knew he was right, but there is nothing like a barber shaving the back of your neck, the warm towel and

A Whiter Shade of Pale

February 1, 2010

Join the forum discussion on this post! Going bald is a big change. One thing I noticed right away was that my head was too white. I needed some sun. I needed my head to match the color of the rest of my body. I looked odd. The sun made me worry. I didn’t want [...]

Action and Reaction

February 1, 2010

I’d like to say the decision to shave my head was my own, but it wasn’t.  I went to my barber and asked him for a trim. Just a trim.  I figured I would cut my hair just a little shorter – to see what it was like.  My barber cut my hair very short.  [...]
